Wooden Boat Tour on Skadar Lake — The Old Way to See the Lake
6 min read · Updated March 2026
The first time I took a wooden boat out of Poseljani I understood something about Skadar that no motorboat ride had taught me. The lake is quieter than you think, older than you think, and the boat is the story as much as the water.
What is a Poseljani wooden boat?
A locally-built wooden boat, usually 6–8 metres, with a small outboard and a canvas canopy. The village of Poseljani, just up the road from Virpazar, has been building them for generations.
These aren't reproductions for tourists. They're the same boats fishermen still use.
What a 4-hour cruise actually looks like
You leave from Poseljani or Virpazar, cross into the reed-bed channels, drift past floating water-lily fields, stop at a small monastery, swim, and return.
You don't cover distance. You cover atmosphere.
Why the slow speed is the point
A slow boat lets you hear the lake — the pelicans, the frogs, the wind in the reeds. It lets birds settle. It lets you actually see the water lilies open, which happens over hours, not seconds.

Best time of year
Late May to late July for water lilies in full bloom. September for warm swims and empty lake. Avoid strong afternoon wind — mornings are almost always better on a wooden boat.
Who this tour is not for
Anyone who wants to see the whole lake in one trip. Anyone with three hours or less. Anyone who doesn't want to sit still.
