Skadar Lake Monasteries — the Full Guide
7 min read · Updated April 2026
The monasteries are the reason I fell in love with this lake. Skadar isn't just water and birds — it's a scattered medieval landscape you reach by boat, and every one of the monasteries has a monk or a caretaker with a story.
Why the monasteries exist here
In the 14th and 15th centuries the Balšić and Crnojević dynasties built monasteries on the islands of Skadar precisely because the water was defensive — hidden, hard to reach, easily supplied. Most are still active or lovingly maintained today.
Kom monastery
On the Odrinska Gora peninsula. Late 14th century. Reached by boat in about 40 minutes from Virpazar. Small, atmospheric, often a monk on site who will show you the frescoes if you're respectful.
Beška monastery
On Beška island. Two churches, one from the 14th century, one from the 15th. Currently a women's monastery — please dress accordingly (shoulders and knees covered).
Moračnik monastery
The most romantic setting — a small island with a single church and a tower, framed by cypress trees. Very few tours visit; you'll usually have it to yourself.

Starčevo monastery
The most historically important — the first Slavic printing press on this territory was here in 1493. Currently home to one very welcoming monk.
How to visit properly
Cover shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing icons. A small donation is customary. If a service is happening, wait outside. Your captain should call ahead — a good one always does.
