The Perfect Montenegro Road Trip Itinerary — 7 Days Including Skadar Lake

9 min read · Updated May 2026

This is the itinerary I actually give to friends. It's built around real driving times, real weather patterns, and putting Skadar Lake in the exact place it belongs in a Montenegro trip — day four or five, when you're ready to slow down.

The overall shape

Fly into Tivat or Dubrovnik, drive down the coast, cross the mountains, land in the lake, finish on a beach. Fly out of Podgorica or Tivat. Total driving: roughly 400 km over 7 days.

Day 1 — Arrive Kotor

Pick up rental car. Walk the old town. Early dinner. Do NOT climb the fortress today — you're tired.

Day 2 — Bay of Kotor & Perast

Morning fortress climb (before 09:00). Afternoon boat to Our Lady of the Rocks from Perast. Dinner in Perast.

Day 3 — Lovćen & Cetinje

Drive over Lovćen via Njeguši (buy pršut). Visit Njegoš mausoleum. Afternoon in Cetinje — small, cultural, calm.

Day 4 — Rijeka Crnojevića & Skadar Lake

Morning: Pavlova Strana viewpoint at golden hour. Continue to Virpazar. Check in, dinner at Konoba Badanj.

Local tip.The only tour in Virpazar that covers the entire lake privately — hidden bays, monasteries and swim stops, all on your own schedule. private all-over-the-lake boat tour

Day 5 — Full-day Skadar boat tour

Full private boat tour of Skadar Lake — 6 to 8 hours. Monasteries, swim stops, lunch on a hidden beach. Sunset from the pier.

Day 6 — Bar and Stari Bar

Drive south to Bar (30 min). Explore Stari Bar ruins under the fig trees. Afternoon swim at a quiet coastal beach.

Day 7 — Budva & departure

Drive to Budva. Old town walk, one last swim. Return car and fly out.
