A Short History of Skadar Lake — from Byzantium to National Park
7 min read · Updated March 2026
I'm not a historian, but I've read a lot and been shown a lot by people who are. This is the version of Skadar's history that helps you actually see what you're looking at from the boat.
Ancient roots
Human settlement on Skadar goes back thousands of years. Illyrian and Roman traces exist around the shores; the Byzantines fortified key points.
The Crnojević dynasty
In the late 15th century, the Crnojević family made this region — with Cetinje as their capital — the last free Slavic state resisting the Ottoman advance. Many of the lake's monasteries date from this period, deliberately built on islands for defence.
Ottoman era and Grmožur
After the fall, the Ottomans held much of the lake for centuries. Grmožur island was fortified as a prison — 'the Montenegrin Alcatraz'. Ruins still stand.

Independence and modernity
Skadar bordered Ottoman and later Albanian territory into the modern era. The current border down the middle of the lake dates from the early 20th century.
The national park
Established in 1983 to protect the extraordinary wetland ecosystem. Today it's a Ramsar site and one of the most important bird reserves in Europe.
