The Crmnica Wine Region Next to Skadar Lake — a Local's Guide
6 min read · Updated April 2026
Half the reason I love living where I do is that a short drive from my house are family wineries producing serious Vranac that never leaves the country. Here is how to actually visit them.
What Crmnica is
A small valley immediately south of Skadar Lake, with a microclimate protected from both mountain cold and coastal humidity. Families here have been making wine for generations.
The grapes you need to know
Vranac — Montenegro's flagship red, deep, spicy, structured. Krstač — a beautiful crisp white you almost never find outside the country.
Three wineries worth a stop
Small family cellars in Virpazar itself, in Godinje and in Limljani. Every serious local recommends a slightly different set — call ahead, most offer tastings by appointment.

How to plan a tasting day
Morning boat tour on Skadar, afternoon wine tasting drive, dinner at Konoba Badanj. Have a designated driver or arrange a private guide with a car.
Pairing food
Vranac with grilled Skadar carp or lamb from the ispod sača (under-the-bell) grill. Krstač with fresh cheeses and pršut.
