Kayaking on Skadar Lake — Where To Go and What To Know
6 min read · Updated April 2026
I keep a kayak at a friend's place in Virpazar and I paddle Skadar every couple of weeks. It's my favourite way to be on this lake — but there are a few local rules that will save you a very unpleasant day if you don't know them.
Best launch points
Virpazar for open lake access and monastery loops. Rijeka Crnojevića for river paddling and the Pavlova Strana bend. Poseljani for direct reed-bed access and the quietest water.
Two easy half-day routes
Virpazar → Grmožur island → back: about 12 km round-trip, 3–4 hours, protected water most of the way. Rijeka Crnojevića → Pavlova Strana → back: about 8 km, drifts on the return, incredible in early morning light.
Wind — the rule that beats every other rule
Skadar is calm at dawn and often builds a hard afternoon wind, especially in summer. Launch by 07:00, be off the open lake by 11:00. If the flags on the pier are moving, don't go far.

Wildlife etiquette
Stay 100 metres from nesting pelicans. Do not chase or crowd birds. Do not paddle into dense reed beds during the breeding season (April–June) — you can destroy nests without seeing them.
Where to rent
Several small operators in Virpazar and one in Rijeka Crnojevića rent sit-on-top kayaks for €15–25 per day. Life jackets are included and mandatory. Bring your own dry bag and 2L of water minimum.
