Best Time for a Lake Skadar Boat Tour — Weather, Seasons & Birds

8 min read · Updated July 2026

I've lived on Skadar Lake for more than a decade and been on the water in every season. When you ask me when to come, the answer isn't "summer" — it depends on what you want to see.

Short answer

Best overall: late May to mid-June, and all of September. Warm weather, few people, blooming water lilies, clear light.

If you can, avoid the last two weeks of July and first two of August — hot, crowded, pricier.

Spring (April–May)

The lake is green, the mountains still snow-capped, birds especially active. Swim temperatures are borderline in early May (18–20°C), pleasant by late May.

Best time for photographers and birdwatchers. Fewer tourists, better prices. Weather can turn — pack a rain jacket.

Summer (June–August)

Warm to hot (up to 38°C in August), water 24–26°C, no rain. This is the season for swim stops and long sunset tours.

Downside: it's busy. Weekend parking in Virpazar is tough, pier-side restaurants are fully booked. Reserve everything ahead.

Autumn (September–October)

My favourite season. Water still warm, air comfortable (22–28°C), grape harvest in full swing, konobas pouring young wine. Fewer than half the summer crowds.

October gets cooler but the light is at its best. Volcano-cliché sunsets almost daily.

Winter (November–March)

Quiet, cool, often mystically foggy. Tours run on request. In clear weather: breathtaking — snowy mountains, mirror-flat lake.

Not the season to swim. But for photographers and travellers seeking silence: the undiscovered Skadar.

Best time for pelicans & birds

Dalmatian pelicans are here year-round but nest March–May. Migratory birds: April and September. Late May is the absolute sweet spot — pelicans, herons, cormorants, all active at once.

Sunrise & sunset

June sunrise: 5:15. Sunset: 20:40. December sunrise 7:15, sunset 16:30. The golden hour before sunset on Skadar is exceptional — the flat water turns into a mirror.

Water levels & lilies

The lake is highest in spring, lowest in late summer. Water lilies bloom roughly late May to early July — the famous white fields that earned Skadar the nickname "Montenegrin Amazon".

If lilies are your main reason: come in June.

Frequently asked

Late July to mid-August can hit 35–38°C. Sunset tours are much nicer than midday tours then.
